Snow Much Damage: What to Check Around Your Home After a Heavy New England Winter

March 24, 20263 min read

If you live in New England, you already know that winter is not a polite guest. It shows up loudly, stays longer than expected, and leaves a bit of a mess behind. This year, especially, with heavy snow piling up across the region, many homeowners are finally seeing what was hiding underneath once the melt began.

The good news is you do not need to climb onto your roof or perform any heroic ladder stunts to figure out if your home needs attention. In fact, we strongly recommend you keep both feet on the ground. A careful walk around your property can reveal a lot.

Here is what to look for now that the snowbanks are shrinking.

First, check your roof from ground level. Winter storms combine snow, ice, and wind, which can shift or loosen shingles. Look for areas that appear darker than the rest of the roof, shingles that look crooked or curled, or even pieces of shingles in your yard. Wind often does just as much damage as snow accumulation. If something looks slightly off, it probably is.

Next, think back to those dramatic icicles that may have formed along your roofline. While they look picturesque, they can signal ice dams. Ice dams form when melting snow refreezes at the edge of your roof, trapping water behind it. That trapped water can work its way under shingles and into your home. Now that temperatures are warming, check inside for ceiling stains, peeling paint near rooflines, or any musty attic smells. Ice damage often reveals itself weeks later.

Gutters deserve attention, too. Snow and ice are extremely heavy. When gutters fill with frozen buildup, the weight can cause them to sag or pull away from the house. Walk around and check for gutters that look uneven, detached brackets, or downspouts that are no longer aligned. Proper drainage is especially important as spring rain begins. Water needs a clear path away from your home’s foundation.

Siding can also take a beating during winter cleanup. Snow shovels, snow blowers, and even plows can accidentally nick or crack exterior panels. Salt spray from the road may cause discoloration. Take a slow lap around your home and look for cracks, loose panels, or warping. Small openings can allow moisture to get behind siding once the spring rains begin.

And do not forget your windows. Winter has a way of exposing drafty frames and older seals. If you noticed rooms that felt colder than usual or condensation between panes, your windows may not be performing efficiently. As temperatures rise, you might also notice difficulty opening or closing them. Modern, energy-efficient windows can improve comfort and reduce energy bills year-round.

The reality is that New England winters are tough on homes. Snow accumulation, freeze-thaw cycles, and high winds all work together to test your exterior surfaces. A quick post-winter inspection now can help prevent bigger, more expensive issues down the road.
